Stop Windows from switching the keyboard to other languages

Ever been typing away and suddenly hitting the double quote key gives you strange characters, or no characters at all? This keeps happening to me, usually just infrequently enough that I have forgotten how to fix it each time it happens.

The quick, but not permanent fix is to hit Ctrl-Shift repeatedly (usually twice) until the proper characters start appearing. The better fix is to stop Windows from selecting a different keyboard:

  • Find the keyboard icon in the system tray.
  • Right-Click -> Settings -> Advanced Key Settings -> Change Key Sequence.
  • Set both the Switch Input Language and Switch Keyboard Layout to Not Assigned.
