• ~ This is not a ‘squiggle’.  It’s a tilde.
• ! This is not a ‘bang’. It’s an exclamation mark.
• # This is not a ‘hashtag’. It’s an octothorpe, or, if you’re as old as me, it’s a ‘pound’ (yes I am old enough to remember when the symbol above the ‘3’ was the British pound symbol – sometimes it was above the 5).
• ^ This is not a ‘hat’. It’s a caret.
• * This is not a ‘star’. It’s an asterisk.
• ( ) These are not ‘smooth brackets’ or ‘curved brackets’.  They are parentheses.
• { } These are not ‘curly brackets’. They are braces.
• [ ] These are not ‘square brackets’. They are brackets.
• / This is not a ‘forward slash’. It is a slash or solidus.
